The Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center Gala

The Worthington Arts Council will present The Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center Gala at the Worthington Industries headquarters on Saturday, 4/14/07.

The Gala theme is "You can make a difference in the life of the arts in Worthington." This special event celebrates capital campaign donations to date, and seeks to take the campaign past the $3.8 million initial construction goal.

The offical invitation mentions  "Special food offerings, exceptional wine selections, Live entertainment and exhibited works of art by Worthington area artists.

Ron was invited to share his artwork at this event, and will have his cityscape entitled "Lafayette Street" showcased for Gala guests. Ron is also partnering with the Worthington Arts Council to exhibit work in the Worthington area beginning in 5/07. The Gala will be an additional opportunity for him to share his artwork in the community.

The Worthington Arts Council web site www.worthingtonarts.org lists additional detail of upcoming activities and events. Information posted on the site about The Arts Center of Worthington describe the space as:

" a venue for the arts community, featuring a 220-seat auditiorium, classrooms, studios, offices and exhibit spaces. Most of these areas will be multi-use and will be abailable for public and private meetings as well as social gatherings."

The Gala should be an exciting evening where past achievements can be celebrated, and future goals can be shared.

Creative Columbus Policy Steering Committee

"New outlook for arts ?"

There is an article in The Columbus Dispatch entitled "New outlook for arts ?" on 4/4/07 that details the efforts of a City Council-created task force charged with  recommending a cultural policy for Columbus, Ohio.

The Creative Columbus Policy Steering Committee membership graded the current art scene on a scale of 1 (low) to 12 (high) in several areas, and those scores are included in this article.

The panel is quoted in the article as stating that "Columbus must do more to fund and promote its struggling cultural scene."

Ron and I have seen a change in leadership over that past few years in several of our prominent arts organizations. I think that the increased activity and support from local politicians, arts patrons and arts enthusiasts in the community are moving us in the right direction.

The Dispatch article mentions that  the committee issued its final report with recommendations to council members recently. This is great news for local artists and arts organizations. I am looking forward to hearing more about this project.

Creative Columbus Policy Steering Committee members include:

  • Beverly Bethge, Chief Creative Officer, Ologie
  • David Chesebrough, President, COSI Columbus
  • Mary Jo Green, Vice President, Time Warner Cable
  • Stephanie Hightower, Vice President, Columbus College of Art & Design
  • Lisa Hinson, President, Hinson Ltd. Public Relations
  • Chad A. Jester, President, Nationwide Foundation
  • Wayne Lawson, Director Emeritus, Ohio Arts Council
  • Jeffrey Lyttle, Vice President, JPMorgan Chase & Co.
  • Nannette Maciejunes, Executive Director, Columbus Museum of Art
  • Robert H. Milbourne, President, Columbus Partnership
  • Jerry Saunders, President, Africentric Personal Development Shop
  • Priscilla Tyson, Columbus City Council member

Greater Columbus Arts Council, Business Arts Partnership

Business Arts Partnership program and the Artistic Excellence Award

The King Arts Complex won the Greater Columbus Arts Council "Artistic Excellence" award for the art installation and educational exhibit "Cargo: The Middle Passage" on 04/25/06. Ron's triptych entitled "Cargo" is the centerpiece of the exhibit which includes two life-size sculpures of children by artist Woodrow Nash.

This $10,000.00 award for the King Arts Complex is well deserved and shows a recognition of the outstanding achievements of Executive Director Barbara Nicholson and her professional staff. Ron and I were very excited to hear this wonderful news and congratulate Barbara Nicholson and every member of her staff who made the dream of creating this exceptional art installation a reality.

The "Cargo: The Middle Passage" installation is a permanent exhibit. Visit The King Arts Complex web site for more information if you would like to view the exhibit. It is definitely worth the visit!

Dublin Area Art League ( DAAL )

DAAL
This is a follow-up to a previous post about the Dublin Area Art League. Ron served as Guest Speaker on 3/9/06 at the member meeting and talked about his experiences in the Visual Arts.
Ron felt that the audience was very interested in what he had to say and he enjoyed the interaction with those in attendance. We have DAAL President Diana Andrews to thank for extending the invitation to Ron to speak at the monthly meeting.
I spoke with Diana and offered to post member feedback on our blog and will use initials instead of member names. When you have a few minutes, visit the Dublin Area Art League web site to find out about upcoming events and membership opportunities.

Member Feedback:

"Ever since I saw Ron's work at the  Springfield Museum, I was amazed at the figures and the feeling behind the scenes. I couldn't leave the picture and kept coming back to it that day to look and admire it some more. It was my number one favorite of all the works in that museum. I so much appreciate his time to come to our DAAL meeting to show us more of his work and share his methods. His is really an inspiration to us aspiring painters.
Thanks" -S. D.

"Dear Ron, I wanted to share with you some of the impressions I had of your work as I shared them with a friend who couldn't make your presentation at the Dublin Library. She had also seen your work at the Springfield Art Museum, and was really disappointed with not being able to come. I was just so impressed with your work and that you took the time to share it with us:

{ Ron was a very humble, extremely talented speaker, so I'm so sorry you missed it too.  His career began in women's fashion design for Halle's. That's why he is so great with figure drawing. He showed us three amazing works that he completed about slaves coming over as cargo on ships, and another a commissioned set of huge works for the Supreme Court about the written word. These pieces were, in my opinion, what will put him a whole different category... as a great artist of our time in Columbus.  The first two pieces were of Babylon and Egypt, the next about Rome and Greece, the next the signing of the Magna Charta and Constitution, one of the French Revolution and one of present day with Lady Liberty. The drama, classic positioning of the composition, use of light, color and dynamic figures all draw you into the scene and make you ponder about what is happening in each. They were truly awesome (and huge!)  I'd like to know if they are available for the public to see. He talked a little about the painting we enjoyed at Springfield's Art museum and he pointed out little things i"d missed. In some of his work he has used relatives or himself as the figures, so it was fun to see those too. Some of his work reminds me of George Bellows, some of Renoir, some of Norman Rockwell the way he is painting everyday life of our time. I really wished you could have been there...} Thank you again, and it was such an honor to meet you!" - B. G.

"Ron, T. B. and I enjoyed your presentation Thurs. very much. Your art is wonderful and we would love to see some of your work in person.  We have your web site on our "Favorites". Thank you for a most enjoyable evening. Regards"- T.B. and B. B.

"Dear Ron, Thank you so very much for sharing your work with us at the March Dublin Area Art League meeting. I found myself becoming "emotionally involved" with so many of your pieces, and I was left wanting to see more. I am new to DAAL this year, and your presentation was by far the most inspirational I have seen. Thanks again for taking time from your hectic schedule to be with us. Best regards" - N. S.

Ohio Plein Air Society

"Paint-Out" and Art Talk

With our recent art installations and art exhibits Ron and I have been staying pretty busy. I am going to post on the blog when I can and try to get back here a  few times each month.

Ron is joining members of the Ohio Plein Air Society this weekend for a "Paint-Out". After spending the morning painting they will meet for lunch  to discuss the arts. This should be a wonderful opportunity for Ron to kick back and talk shop and spend time with fellow local artists.

The Ohio Plein Air Society is an active organization with very talented artists. Check out their web site for program details and membership information:
